Brief Description: C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory:

The mission of the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory is to provide clinical anthropological services and state of the art cutting-edge anthropological, legal and technical laboratory-based education and training to graduate students, and professionals in the fields of anthropology, medicine, analytical chemistry and biology, and law enforcement. The major target audiences for these activities are anthropologists, physicians, scientists and technical experts practicing in communities and various jurisdictions in the state of Florida; but may also include anthropologists, physicians, technical experts or human biologists from across the United States and around the world. This mission is addressed through the provision of seminars, workshops, review courses, symposia, conferences, meetings, lecture series, enduring materials, grand rounds, fellowships, post-doctoral scientists and visiting professors programs focused on these competencies.

In 1991 the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory, named in recognition of a generous donation from C. Addison Pound, Jr., was built on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida as an extension of the Florida Museum of Natural History. It is devoted solely to the practice of forensic anthropology. Dr. William R. Maples served as the laboratory's first director from 1991 until 1996. During that time he was involved in the investigations of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of such notable figures as President Zachary Taylor, Francisco Pizzaro, the family of Czar Nicholas II, and civil rights advocate Medgar Evers.

Today the C. A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory is the premier forensic anthropology laboratory in the country and one of the busiest, handling between 100 and 150 cases annually. The Laboratory performs analyses of skeletal remains for all 24 medical examiner districts in the State of Florida, and additionally provides forensic services when requested to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the United States Army Central Identification Laboratory, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New York State Police Forensic Sciences Unit, the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office, and any state or federal agency that requests our professional assistance. Although most of the cases received at the laboratory originate from law enforcement agencies and medical examiners within the State of Florida, laboratory personnel, including graduate students, have been involved in numerous cases of national and international interest.

In 1996, the C. A. Pound Laboratory formally moved its administration to the Department of Anthropology, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Anthony B. Falsetti became director. The lab currently occupies 2400 sq. ft. with separate laboratory, graduate student, administrative, and conference areas. Service to the State of Florida and outside agencies continues to be the major focus of the laboratory, while interaction and coordination of graduate student education with members of the teaching faculty have increased dramatically. Graduate students work closely with Dr. Falsetti in all aspects of casework including the search and recovery of human remains at clandestine sites, trauma analysis, and video superimposition techniques. The relationship of the C.A. Pound Laboratory with the Departments of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine, Water and Soil Sciences, Entomology, and the College of Health and Human Performance has increased the research opportunities for the graduate students.

Since 1991 the caseload at the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory has increased dramatically, from 71 cases in 1991 to averaging some 120 - 180 skeletal examinations annually since 1996 . Concurrent with this rise in the number of cases has been the increase in graduate student participation, from two in 1991 to the current number of eight full-time masters and doctoral level students. Since 1996, the laboratory has played an active role in over 1000 skeletal examinations.

The C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory is an element of the William R. Maples Forensic Science Center currently under development at the University of Florida. The lab's long association with other forensic professionals, both at the University of Florida and elsewhere, has aided its growth and success.
